It's in the geology! A river erodes a steep walled canyon. Then a deep layer of volcanic ash in the form of soft tufa was spread across the landscape. The soft cliff sides provided bronze age humans a way to dig caves. The creation of hand hued caves for shelter resulted with groups of early people forming Bronze age communities in the canyon. Some of the caves can still be seen across the canyon. During later times more recent structures continued to be built into the tufa including our hotel and medieval churches we visited. The sculpture in the piazza is a rain drop.
The canyon where human began living here.

Antica Abitazione was nice portrayal of a multi purpose cave dwelling. The livestock were kept in the cave to protect them from theft and predators. In cold weather they also provided some warmth in the home.
